HOW TO GET TO YOUR ADVENTURE. We are based out of the tiny towns of McCarthy and Kennecott, in the heart of America's largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. Not all our trips originate in McCarthy, but we recommend that you come anyway! Wrangell St. Elias is the "Mountain Kingdom" of Alaska and contains some of the most raw, majestic scenery you will find anywhere in the state, and without any crowds!

There are several ways to get to McCarthy-Kennecott from Anchorage. We know it can be hard to get here, but trust us, it's worth it!

Fly: Wrangell Mountain Air offers three daily flights from Chitina, at the edge of the park. They also offer charter flights from Anchorage and other destinations within Alaska. Ellis Air offers scheduled flights to McCarthy from Anchorage or Glennallen on Wednesdays and Fridays. Get delivered with the mail!

Rent a car: There are many rental car agencies in Anchorage, but the only one that we know of that allows their cars to be driven down the McCarthy Road is Levi - (907) 563-2279.

Bus: Backcountry Connection offers daily van service from Glennallen to McCarthy. Their site also has good information about connecting service to and from Anchorage and other destinations.

If you are meeting us in Valdez or the Copper River Basin to begin your trip (Copper River, Grand Alaska Adventure, Source to Sea, Discover Alaska), you can use Ellis Air or rent a car. In addition, there are commercial flights to Valdez from Anchorage on Era Aviation and Alaska Airlines.

If you are still at a loss or have any question, don't hesitate to give us a call!

WHERE TO STAY IN MCCARTHY & KENNECOTT:

Many of our visitors spend a day or two in the McCarthy-Kennecott area before or after their trip. We recommend that you go hiking on the Root Glacier, tour the mining ghost town of Kennecott, and take a flightseeing trip over some of our mind-blowing scenery while you are here.

There are a number of great places to stay in the area...

Kennicott Bed and Breakfast
Beautiful, new, spacious apartments in the heart of historic Kennecott. Great views of the Kennecott Glacier and Mt. Blackburn. Wide selection of make-it-yourself breakfast, modern facilities including complete kitchen. Next door to Kennicott Glacier Lodge if you want to eat out. Built and owned by Rick Jurick. Operated by Terry and Dee Frady, who run the classy gift store upstairs.

Kennicott Glacier Lodge
Built in 1987, the Kennicott Glacier Lodge is a replica of one of the historic mining buildings from the copper mining boom town days. Warm atmosphere, friendly service and an incredible view. Located near the center of the ghost town of Kennicott.

Currant Ridge Cabins
Alaskan log cabins with all the comforts of home, including full kitchen and private bath. Located at Mile 56.7 of the McCarthy Road, only a short distance from McCarthy. Built, owned and operated by the lovely Shidner Family.

Kennicott River Lodge and Hostel
Kennicott River Lodge and Hostel offers dormitory style cabins, private rooms or private cabins. Located ¼ mile from the Kennicott River.

McCarthy Bed & Breakfast
All cabins and rooms at the McCarthy Bed & Breakfast are comfortably furnished with heat, lights & private bathrooms. Located off of the McCarthy Road, ½ mile from the Kennicott River.

McCarthy Lodge
McCarthy Lodge has a long history of business since its construction in 1916. Since this historic building had previous uses before McCarthy was even formed, it is the oldest structure inside Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Not just located in, but in fact the center of McCarthy.
