McCarthy-Kennecott Transport Options, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
We are based out of the tiny towns of McCarthy and Kennecott, in the heart of America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. Not all our trips originate in McCarthy, but we recommend that you come anyway! Wrangell-St. Elias is the “Mountain Kingdom” of Alaska and contains some of the most raw, majestic scenery you will find anywhere in the state, and without any crowds! There are several ways to get to McCarthy-Kennecott from Anchorage or elsewhere in the state. We know it can be hard to get here, but trust us, it’s worth it! Here are the options for McCarthy-Kennecott transport:
Wrangell Mountain Air offers three daily flights from Chitina, at the edge of the park. Chitina is a 5 hour drive from Anchorage, 2.5 hours from Valdez and about 6 hours from Fairbanks. You can leave your car parked at the airport there. They also offer charter flights from Anchorage and other destinations within Alaska. We works very closely with them and highly recommend them for any bush flying needs. Copper Valley Air Service offers reasonably priced scheduled flights directly to McCarthy from Anchorage (with a short stop in Glennallen) on Monday and Thursday mornings, and then immediately return. The flight leaves Anchorage at 8:30am, arriving in McCarthy at 11am. It leaves around 11:15 and gets you into Anchorage early afternoon. Get delivered with the mail!
Rent a car:
There are many rental car agencies in Anchorage, but only a few will allow you to drive your car down the McCarthy Road. We recommend the friendly folks at Falcon Car Rental, as they will let you drive any of their standard cars to McCarthy, and also have competitive rates.
The Kennicott Shuttle offers daily van service from Glennallen to McCarthy. Their site also has good information about connecting service to and from Anchorage and other destinations. If you are meeting us in Valdez or the Copper River Basin to begin your trip (Copper River, Grand Alaska Adventure, Source to Sea, Discover Alaska), you can use Copper Valley Air or rent a car. In addition, there are commercial flights to Valdez from Anchorage on Era Aviation and Alaska Airlines. We recommend that you contact us before finalizing your plans if you are scheduled on a multi-day trip with us. We can help make sure you’ve got the best option for your particular situation.
