Experience Real Alaska Whitewater!
Combine a scenic paddle around the lake at the toe of the Kennicott Glacier with 5 fun miles of splashy whitewater on this half-day adventure.
You will meet your guide in the morning at our base in the historic Motherlode Powerhouse in downtown McCarthy. After getting fitted with the appropriate clothing, enjoy a quarter-mile walk through the boreal forest, learning about the local natural history. When you reach the edge of the lake your boats are waiting.
After a short safety briefing, you will paddle around the icebergs, cliffs and moraine with spectacular views of the Kennicott and Root Glaciers, the Stairway Icefall, Bonanza, Donoho and Fireweed Mountains, and the town of Kennecott. Your guide will explain the natural processes that led to this unusual and fascinating landscape.
After an hour of exploring the lake, you’ll head for the edge of the lake, where the river pours out and heads downstream. Some of the best rapids are right off the bat, splashy and fun. Enjoy 5 miles of Class II-III whitewater with the Icefall as your backdrop.
