The granddaddy of all Alaska rafting trips
The Copper Oar Source to the Sea Expedition is an unparalleled Alaska wilderness experience. An awe-inspiring journey through the world’s largest protected wildnerness, this guided adventure starts deep within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park at the lake at the terminus of the Nizina Glacier.
Only a handful of people have ever paddled around this stunningly beautiful lake filled with icebergs, to then continue downriver through over 150 miles of untrammeled wilderness to Miles Lake, the Copper river delta, and the Pacific Ocean.
Occasionally leaving the rafts at the bank of the river, the adventure continues on land with multiple day-hiking opportunities including: scenic hidden waterfalls on the upper Nizina, sky scraping peaks above the Chitistone river valley, and to the rippled sands of the unique Bremner dunes.
Camping comfortably on the banks of the Nizina, Chitina, and ultimately the Copper River, you can truly relax while enjoying expansive views of the St. Elias, Wrangell, and Chugach mountain ranges. No roads, no utility poles, just you and your traveling companions, exploring the wild, sustained by the delicious fresh and hearty meals prepared by your experienced guides.
The Source to the Sea Expedition is the ideal trip for those seeking an extended journey through the heart of the Alaskan backcountry. Beginning and ending in Anchorage, Alaska, the trip begins with a van ride to Chitina, Alaska and then a breathtaking bush plane flightsee to the historically-rich town of McCarthy, Alaska. Another short flightsee to Nizina Lake and the raft adventure begins. The trip ends near the charming coastal town of Cordova. From there, you’ll fly back to Anchorage or take the ferry back to Valdez to continue your Alaska trip.
Highlights Include:
- Mile-high cliffs in Upper Nizina Canyon
- Day hiking in the Chitistone Valley
- Abundant waterfalls
- Glaciers calving into the Copper river
- Wildlife viewing opportunities (bears, lynx, eagles, moose, salmon, seals)
- A delicious dining experience
- Truly remote and unspoilt wilderness
